FIRING TABLES AND BALLISTICS DIVISION OF THE FIRE CONTROL SYSTEMS & TECHNOLOGY DIRECTORATE

OVERVIEW

The Firing Tables and Ballistics Division (FTaB) is responsible for ballistic characterization of munitions and the development of aiming data and ballistic fire control information for all unguided and certain guided combat weapon systems in the US Army inventory, select tri-service systems and select foreign military sales cases. This includes small caliber infantry systems, mortars, armored vehicles, artillery and rockets. The authority for FTaB exists under Army Materiel Command Regulation 25-30 “Development and Control of Firing Tables and Ballistic Fire Control Information.”

FTaB MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Characterization of projectile ballistic performance
  • Development, maintenance and testing of shareable ballistic fire control software for U.S. and multinational weapon systems and training platforms
  • Development of ballistic algorithms, methodologies and data relating to fire control computers and manual backups
  • Provides ballistic expertise and support to the DoD and industry for munitions and fire control equipment in the development cycle
  • Development of a rational basis for North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and multinational standardization agreements involving interior and exterior ballistic simulation models, ballistic algorithms, firing table elements, and fire control methodology
  • FTaB is the primary source for interchangeability of fire control information for U.S. forces regarding NATO ammunition.

BALLISTIC REVIEW BOARD

The Ballistic Review Board (BRB) was chartered by FTaB under AMC-R 25-30 in 2004 to serve as the focal point for the development of all fire support ballistics related requirements that are implemented into Army and Marine Corps (indirect fire) fire support systems.

NATO ICGIF SG/2 Panel

Integrated Capability Group – Indirect Fire, Sub-Group 2 on Ballistics, Effectiveness and Fire Control Software
Sub Group 2 (SG/2) of AC/225-Integrated Capability Group –Indirect Fire (ICG-IF) is responsible for ballistics technology, effectiveness,
fire control software and interchangeability of all indirect fire ammunition (including accuracy and testing for artillery, mortars and
rockets), and, where applicable, to support direct fire and naval gun ballistics.
SG/2 is to develop and maintain STANAGs and Allied Publications to standardise assessment of ballistic performance of munitions, to
include accuracy and effectiveness, fire control systems, and the interchangeability of all NATO indirect fire ammunition.
Within its mission, SG/2 will concentrate work on three areas of Ballistics Performance, Studies of Ammunition Interchangeability, and
Standardised Firing Tables and Fire Control Software; as each will focus on the development of the NATO Sub-Group 2 Sharable (Fire
Control) Software Suite (S4).
Ballistics Performance
•To keep under review new techniques and advances in ballistics.
•To review ballistics testing procedures, test instruments and technical data with a view to making national tests acceptable to other
NATO nations, if necessary through the medium of STANAGs, thereby avoiding duplication.
•To understand the contribution of ballistics performance to precision and accuracy of munitions and preparing, where necessary, the
associated error budgets.
•To standardise the implementation of effectiveness information for shareable software.
Studies of Ammunition Interchangeability
•To compare the ballistics of indirect fire ammunition used by the NATO nations in order to determine the degree of interchangeability.
•To develop STANAGs, Allied Publications and databases that enables and formally promulgates the interchangeability of NATO
indirect fire ammunition.
•To keep under review munitions developments within NATO, ensuring that interchangeability is maintained and, where possible,
improved.
•To keep under review all international agreements (bilateral, quadrilateral, etc.) pertaining to indirect fire ammunition interchangeability
and, if agreed by SG/2 in plenary session, entering these into the appropriate Allied Publications and databases.
Standardised Firing Tables and Fire Control Software
•To maintain Standard Firing Table Formats.
•To develop and maintain the STANAGs and Allied Publications that supports the NATO technical and operational shareable fire control
software.
•To maintain oversight of the technical aspects of SG/2 fire control software.
•To develop and maintain the SG/2 Shareable (Fire Control) Software Suite NATO Cooperative Programme.
•To develop and maintain the SG/2 Shareable Platform (Operational) Software NATO Cooperative Programme.
•To maintain and ensure that sufficient meteorological technology is available for the efficient operation of NATO Firing Tables and
ballistic fire control software.
The Sub-Group 2 Shareable (Fire Control) Software Suite (S4)
•Umbrella NATO cooperative programme with five individual cooperative projects, all under the auspices of NAAG AC/225, Land
Capability Group 3 (Fire Support), Sub-Group 2 (Accuracy and Ballistics).
•Each project develops one or multiple software products.
•Software products, designed to be embedded in the executive level software of a fire control computer.
•When combined the products provide most if not all of the basic capability required by a fire control computer.
•The software products include: NABK, NAMK, NIFAK, NASS, TEDM, GLUM, NAGIK Common products, METM, GMVerify, and CI
products.
